The Rug Code hero

OUR STORY

The Rug Code

We're a collective of weavers, dyers, artists, historians, ethnographers, and storytellers dedicated to sharing Armenian rugs and the coded meanings of their ornaments. Armenia is one of the oldest weaving centers of the world, yet it is not recognized as so. Today, rug making is on the verge of disappearing from the country’s villages. We’re on a mission to breathe new life into this craft, creating meaningful employment for rural weavers and guaranteeing clients a high quality, 100% made in Armenia heirloom. The Rug Code began in 2024 to change the way people discover and shop for Armenian rugs, making it easier to purchase handmade rugs directly from rural creators, providing them with meaningful employment and keeping the practice alive in Armenia's villages. Stories are meant to be told, and by telling the stories of our rugs, the coded meanings of their ornaments, and who their makers are transparently, we hope to bring a little ancient magic to every purchase.

OUR ETHICS AND SUSTAINABILITY PROFILE

We work exclusively with rural weavers living and creating outside the capital Yerevan. We're dedicated to continuously improving working conditions, benefits, and wages for our rural partners, no matter how far away they are from Yerevan.
