Rumours of Rain & The Theatre of Water WAS SKILLFULLY HANDMADE BY FRANCES v.H Studio IN SOUTH AFRICA PART OF THE 'Are We There Yet' COLLECTION.
THE STORY BEHIND THIS PRODUCT
This prayer mat for the everyday captures the happenings in the Karoo when the rains come, or fail to fall. The radios start to crackle from Beaufort West to Leeu-Gamka following the movement of thunderstorms.
‘Klaas, Klaas, Klaas, kom in.’ ‘Staan-by. ‘Waar val die reën nou?’ ‘Nee wat, die rivier lê nog droog. Maar ek hoor hom. Hy gaan sommer nou hier wees.’ ‘Daar by Kat Rivier ruk hy hom los.’ ‘Lyk vir my so. Die lig trek donker.’ ‘Hier val hy so doef sag.’ ‘O net so effentjies.’ ‘Nou maar ja.’
‘Doef sag’ – one of the most beautiful expressions telling of the various forms of rain and the sounds she makes. ‘Doef sag’ speaks to the softest drizzle. A murmur of rain landing on dry land.
There is nothing like rain in the Karoo and the celebration of life that follows. The kapok hoenders start prancing like uptight royalty getting tipsy over Christmas lunch. The vygies come out, turning dusty plains into a tapestry of primary purple, acid orange, and never-seen-before greens.
