The Collaboration
We Are Legacy has collaborated with RaasLeela to bring visibility to a practice where zero-waste design, upcycling, and handcraft are inseparable, embedding the story of material, process, and making directly into each piece through We Are Legacy Digital Identity Tags.
RaasLeela works with waste not as a byproduct, but as a starting point, combining reclaimed materials with a rare double-cloth Sujani weaving technique that requires two artisans to work in perfect coordination. By connecting each piece to its maker, method, and material journey, this collaboration makes visible a system that is both technically complex and intentionally low-impact, ensuring its value is recognised and cannot be lost over time.
The Product
Rafiq ni Sujani expands the boundaries of what Sujani quilts are traditionally known for. Developed in close collaboration with master artisan Rafiq Bhai, the piece introduces new colour palettes, patterns, and compositions while remaining grounded in traditional knowledge and working methods.
Four Shades explores this evolution further. Moving away from the conventional checkered layout, the quilt experiments with colour blocks and stripes, creating a flowing gradation of blue tones. Appliqué elements in kora and red add contrast and depth, reinterpreting the Sujani in a contemporary context while preserving its essence.
The Craft
Sujani is a handwoven quilt tradition from Bharuch, Gujarat, practiced for over 175 years. The name is derived from “Sujvu,” meaning to conceive or to imagine, reflecting the conceptual nature of the craft.
Technically, Sujani is a woven padded double cloth. Rectangular pockets are created through the precise interchanging of warp and weft, which are then filled with cotton to form a finished quilt directly on the loom. The process requires two weavers working simultaneously from either side, passing the shuttle in perfect coordination.
This dual weaving technique is both structurally complex and deeply collaborative, making each piece a result of shared rhythm, timing, and skill.
About RaasLeela
RaasLeela is a slow fashion textile studio based in Gujarat, India, founded in 2013. The practice centres on hand processes, upcycling, and zero-waste design.
Each textile is entirely hand stitched, with irregularities embraced as a natural expression of the maker. Variations in stitch, even within the work of a single artisan, are preserved as markers of individuality, ensuring that every piece is unique.
Ethics and Sustainability
Sustainability is integral to RaasLeela’s approach, beginning at the design stage. The studio prioritises zero-waste production, working with reclaimed and responsibly sourced materials to minimise environmental impact.
Textiles are made using hand-spun and handwoven cotton, free from chemical dyes and bleaching processes. This reduces water pollution while also protecting the health of the artisans working with the materials.
By combining low-impact processes with artisan-led production, RaasLeela creates a model that values both environmental responsibility and human expression, positioning craft as a living, evolving practice.
We Are Legacy, founded in Stockholm in 2024, is a digital platform that is redefining how handmade products are understood- using verified digital tags that connect products to makers, materials, and stories. Through a simple tap or scan, each product reveals key information about its origin, production context, and the people behind it.
This is not about digitising craft.
It is about ensuring its legacy - by restoring value to the people whose hands create it.
